The fire problem in cold storage
Cold stores hold large volumes of insulation, racking, packaging and produce. Once a fire starts, it spreads fast. That is why more projects β and more insurers β now specify a non-combustible core rather than a standard foam panel.
What makes rockwool different
Rockwool is made from melted volcanic rock spun into fibres. It is non-combustible (A2 fire rating) and will not feed a fire the way foam cores can. In a rockwool panel, the high-density rockwool core is edge-sealed with polyurethane so the panel still delivers clean, airtight joints and strong thermal performance.
Where rockwool panels are used
- Cold stores inside or attached to food factories
- Fire-rated walls and partitions in warehouses
- Projects with strict insurance or building-code requirements
- Facilities where sound insulation also matters
Rockwool vs PIR β which to pick
PIR gives excellent insulation and B1 fire resistance at a lower cost. Rockwool gives A2 non-combustibility, better acoustic performance and peace of mind where fire risk is highest. Many projects use both: PIR for the main envelope, rockwool for fire-rated walls.
